Is Among Us Still Popular
Innersloth's Among Us rose to popularity in 2020, but its success seems to have diminished significantly since then. Is Among Us still popular?

The indie game Among Us caught the attention of the gaming world as a whole last year, going so far as to become one of Steam's best-selling games in 2020. Its massive surge in players didn't seem to last very long, however, which raises the question of whether it could still be considered popular at all today. So, how many people still play Among Us as of July 2021?
Although Among Us was first released in 2018, it didn't become big until 2020 when it was discovered by popular Twitch and YouTube streamers and catapulted into the public eye. Part of its success may have been due to COVID-19 lockdowns; Among Us' social deduction and multiplayer elements made it popular to play with friends in a time when many people were unable to meet up in-person. The fact that it was easy and fun to stream certainly didn't hurt either, though, and along with Animal Crossing: New Horizons many came to consider Among Us one of 2020's most important games by the end of the year.
Among Us was so popular that its developer, Innersloth, ended up scrapping the planned sequel to instead focus on improving the current state of Among Us for its newfound player base. Alongside server improvements and other fine-tuning, the game has gone through some large changes since 2020, including the release of new maps, colors, and even a revamped art style. 2021's Among Us roadmap also outlines Innersloth's plans to add a Hide-and-Seek game mode and additional roles alongside the game's fifth map and the 15 player lobby update, which released on June 15. Despite all these changes, though, Among Us hasn't quite managed to reclaim the heights of popularity it found last year.
How Many People Still Play Among Us In 2021

As of July 2021, Among Us tends to have between 10,000 and 20,000 players in-game on Steam at any given time according to Steam Charts. Recent additions haven't seemed to draw many players back into Among Us, either, at least not in the way they would have a year or so earlier. There wasn't much of a change in active players between May and July despite June's update. While it's certainly no small number, especially compared to the game's humble beginnings, by comparison it had nearly 400,000 players in September 2020 on Steam.
Even much older games with less frequent content updates tend to have more daily players than Among Us does. Team Fortress 2 (TF2), for example, has around 75,000 daily players on Steam. While this could be because of the pricing difference - TF2 is free-to-play whereas Among Us costs $5 on Steam (it's free on mobile), not including skin bundles and other add-ons - it may also imply that Among Us just doesn't have the longevity that other multiplayer games have, or that it was merely a fad game. However, these numbers don't take into account mobile or Switch users, although PC users accounted for about 64% of all active Among Us players prior to its Switch release.
It's possible that the game's fifth map will bring many players back, as could the new role and game modes that are planned to be introduced. It could just be a matter of people getting bored with the current lack of content, and Among Us' relative lack of popularity could just be a temporary lull as a result. There's little reason to assume the game is dying altogether, either, given Among Us was downloaded 15 million times during its giveaway week on the Epic Games Store. Future announcements from Innersloth could also draw players back in. For example, if Among Us 2 is ever brought back into development, it could bring back the hype for the original as well. Regardless of what the future of Among Us looks like, though, its developers seem intent on continually improving the experience for those players who still remain.
