Among Us How Proximity Chat Alters Gameplay
A mod for Among Us adds proximity chat to InnerSloth's social-deception hit. Here's how to install the mod and how it changes Among Us' core gameplay.

InnerSloth's Among Us has risen to popularity during a time when plenty of people are stuck at home and looking for ways to have fun with friends while staying safe. With Among Us shocking many by taking home two awards at the Game Awards, the social-deduction genre seems to have renewed in popularity, harkening back to the days of Garry's Mod and Trouble in Terrorist Town. Much like with TTT, fans have begun creating mods for Among Us that add new and interesting game modes.
One particular mod that is receiving plenty of attention adds proximity voice chat to the game. Created by Twitter user Ottomated_, Crew Link adds in-game voice chat, which changes in volume depending on a player's location compared to others. In other words, players can only hear other crewmates if they're nearby. Given that the standard gameplay of Among Us is comprised of silent task-completion until a body is found or an emergency meeting is called, proximity voice chat adds an incredibly interesting twist to the game.

For now, proximity chat is only available for the PC version of Among Us. This means that Crew Link is required to both hear others with proximity chat and to use the feature youself. Crew Link also uses the creator's public voice chat server, which understandably may not be built to support a huge volume of players without the creator having to pay for larger server space. To remedy this, Ottomated also provides the files needed for the more tech-savvy players to host their own private voice-chat server.
Ottomated created a comprehensive video on how to set up Crew Link, though it's a fairly simple set-up process. Those who wish to use Crew Link should first download it from GitHub. Instead of launching Among Us through Steam, players should use the "Launch Game" button found in the Crew Link app. From there, the gear icon can help make sure their microphone settings are correct.
When making sure Crew Link is set up properly, it's a good idea to run Among Us in windowed mode. This allows users to see if the app is both properly reading their game and if they're connected to the voice server. From there, players should load into a private game where they should see their crewmate appear in Crew Link. If there's a green circle around said crewmate, that means that Crew Link has connected to the voice chat servers, while a red circle means there was a problem connecting to said servers.
To use Crew Link with friends, everyone needs to be running the latest non-beta version of Among Us on PC. As long as everyone has set up the app properly, it should be able to detect who is in the game and who has voice chat enabled. From there, it's just a matter of loading into the game and playing with the added benefit of proximity chat.

Proximity voice chat is a huge change for Among Us' gameplay, but one that keeps the secretive nature of the game intact. Crewmates are able to communicate and coordinate to a degree that still allows imposters to use stealth to their advantage. Normal voice chat means crewmates are able to communicate no matter where they are on the ship, which makes it hard for the imposter to deceive the other players. With proximity voice chat, imposters are still able to benefit from the core lack of communication element that's essential to Among Us.
Games with multiple imposters also benefit from this feature, as imposters are able to directly communicate plans with each other in secret -- as long as they're sure no one else is around. In a way, proximity voice chat may allow imposters to use more strategic, long-con plays. If they're able to set up kills and keep crewmates from a certain part of the ship with distractions, they could be able to slowly pick off other players.
Proximity voice chat also opens up the element of sound to the game. Rather than just relying on a player's last confirmed location or what a player sees, crewmates may be able to deduce an imposter based on who they can hear and where they are. If Innersloth ever decides to officially implement Ottomated's proximity voice chat, there could even be a station similar to the security cameras or admin panel that allows players to track audio levels in certain rooms. Even in its current state as a mod, Crew Link is an incredibly compelling feature that adds new layer of strategy (and paranoia) to Among Us.
