Among Us Roles Experience Points & All New Content Explained
The new Cosmicube update for Among Us is its biggest yet, introducing new cosmetics, roles and an experience system for players to progress through.

The studio behind Among Us, InnerSloth, has finally released a massive content update for the game. The Cosmicube Update brings brand new roles, an experience points system, and more new content to Among Us, including the titular Cosmicubes. InnerSloth has previously released new maps and tasks to Among Us, but the Cosmicube Update represents the most significant addition thus far.
InnerSloth has been working hard on the game since its launch in 2018 and following its booming popularity in the past year, and despite numerous copycats - including Fortnite's controversial Impostors mode - Among Us remains king of the online social deduction game. It's a trend that's likely to continue when the game releases on Xbox and PlayStation consoles later this year. With the addition of further updates, it'll be difficult for other deduction games to dethrone Among Us.
But the Cosmicube Update isn't just introducing new roles and experience points. The new update introduces players to new in-game currencies, a shop, and achievements. It's the biggest update InnerSloth has made to Among Us since its launch, and will provide new twists on gameplay.
Among Us Cosmicube Update - Experience Points & In-Game Currency

One of the major changes to Among Us in this update is the addition of rewards upon completing a game. Players can accrue experience points in addition to in-game currencies known as Beans and Pods upon completing a game. These points and currencies are earned from the standard events every player experiences in a given round of Among Us. Completing tasks as a crewmate, getting kills as an Impostor in Among Us, guessing who the Impostor is correctly, and winning rounds results in further experience point and currency gains.
Although there is currently no known use for experience points outside of increasing your characters level for "bragging rights", Beans and Pods are used in the in-game store and Cosmicubes respectively. The update also introduces a third type of currency, known as Stars. Stars can only be purchased with real-world money, acting as the premium currency of Among Us.
Among Us' New Update Adds Cosmicubes & The Shop

The Cosmicubes that this update is named after act as a sort of progression system for Among Us. Players acquire Pods after completing games and can in turn spend those Pods in a Cosmicube on cosmetic items, such as unique Among Us skins and hats. The progression in which these cosmetics are unlocked in a given Cosmicube is branching, allowing players the freedom to go in which direction they prefer, whether they're attempting to mainline a desired cosmetic item or go in a certain order to try and complete a set of cosmetics.
The Shop is a new feature in Among Us, allowing players to spend the Beans they've earned on the cosmetics they'd like, as well as spending the premium currency, Stars, on flashier items. Also included in this update is the new Visor cosmetic slot, allowing avatars to wear both headgear cosmetics and face cosmetics at the same time, and new backgrounds for the player names as they appear during Among Us' emergency meetings.
The New Among Us Update Adds Achievements

A long-requested addition to the game, Achievements have finally been added to Among Us, as well as matching Steam achievements. Achievements vary from those tracking your progress, such as completing 10, 100, and then 500 tasks as a crewmate, as well as the number of wins you've received on maps, all the way to more complex ones, such as Circumventer, awarded to players for winning a round as Impostor without using the vents. Achievements are a welcome addition to Among Us, and should add greater replayability to the game.
New Among Us Roles Have Now Been Introduced

The biggest change by far in this update, of course, is the brand new roles brought to the game, some of which have been requested by fans, based on Among Us mods that players have created. The Shapeshifter is the new variant on the standard Impostor, previously teased during Halloween. Shapeshifters have the ability to disguise themselves as other crewmates. This ability can be used to create even more confusion than a standard Among Us lobby typically already has, allowing Shapeshifters to disguise as innocent players, hop in vents and kill players to make it appear as though the innocent player is the traitor. Players will have to use the shapeshifting ability carefully, as it doesn't last forever and leaves evidence behind upon use.
The Scientist is a new role for crewmates, allowing players to track the vitals of the crew to see who's alive and who's dead. Although this feature has been available in previous Among Us maps before this, the Scientist allows players to keep an eye on the crew's vitals while on the move, no longer bound to a single room to check vitals. The battery does not last forever, though, and Scientist players will have to complete tasks in order to keep the battery on their vitality checker charged.
The Engineer is another new role for crewmates and is the first time non-Impostor players have access to traveling across the map through the vents. Unlike Impostors, however, Engineers are limited to their use of vents by a cooldown. Regardless, this ability is huge for the Crewmates team, allowing for much faster and less-predictable movement than what the Impostors could previously take advantage of. It does come with the side effect that calling out venting players has gotten a lot more complicated, as catching someone in the act of hopping in or out of a vent in Among Us is no longer a definite sign of an Impostor.
The Guardian Angel is the final new role revealed in the Cosmicube Update, and is the only role that isn't granted to players at the beginning of the round, and is instead granted to the first crewmate who dies. The Guardian Angel allows players to protect fellow crewmates, granting living crewmates temporary shields that will stop Among Us' Impostors from killing their victims. This can swing games in the favor of Crewmates, as an animation is played when an Impostor breaks this temporary shield, giving the Crewmate time to run away and call an Emergency Meeting while the Impostor's next kill is on cooldown. These shields don't last forever, and have a sizeable cooldown on base settings, however, so Guardian Angels will need to time their shields just right in order to maximize the protection of their fellow teammates and thwart Among Us' impostors.
These new features offer both long-time players who have never stopped playing a breath of fresh air, and returning players a reason to come back. With new roles for both Impostors and Crewmates, the game has never been more stressful - a very good thing in a social deduction genre. With continued support from InnerSloth, Among Us may just be able to sustain its success instead of being a one-time viral hit.
